The TTAWJ and the CAWJ pay tribute to our beloved Sister Sharlene Jaggernauth, a distinguished colleague and an inspiring leader whose dedication and compassion left an indelible mark on the legal landscape of Trinidad and Tobago. Sharlene Jaggernauth’s passing on December 30, 2024, has left a void in the hearts of all who knew her and within the institutions that she so passionately served.

Sharlene Jaggernauth’s legal career was one characterized by an unwavering commitment to justice, especially for the most vulnerable in society—our children. Her tenure as the Head of the Legal Unit at the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago was marked by her relentless advocacy for children’s rights. She was a pivotal force in the Authority’s legal proceedings, representing the institution in numerous cases before the courts of Trinidad and Tobago. Her expertise and passion were also evident in her insightful presentations to the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, where she illuminated the complexities of child rights and new legislative frameworks to students and practitioners alike.

In 2021, Master Sharlene Jaggernauth took her seat as a Master in the Family Court of the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago. Her role extended beyond the bench, as she became a beacon of hope for many families. She presided over critical matters involving applications for protection orders in cases of domestic violence, maintenance, and access disputes. Her judicious temperament and empathetic approach to each case ensured that justice was not just served but felt by those who sought it.

As a member of the TTAWJ, Master Jaggernauth was particularly passionate about the issue of domestic violence in society. She was one of the initiators of the TTAWJ’s project on domestic violence, connecting the Association with International bodies and always willing to assist or lead in any way she could.

Beyond her national contributions, Master Jaggernauth emerged as a rising leader within the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ). Her biography on the IAWJ’s website reflects a career dedicated to addressing the systemic challenges faced by women and girls, particularly those living with HIV in the Caribbean. Through her scholarly articles, she shed light on the intersection of human rights and health, advocating for policies that protect and empower marginalized communities. Her work within the IAWJ demonstrated her commitment to fostering a more just and equitable world, not only within her jurisdiction but across the globe.

On a personal note, those of us who had the privilege of attending the 16th IAWJ Biennial Conference 2023 in Morocco will always remember the unique bond we shared with Sharlene on that occasion. It was there that we experienced her caring nature and adventurous spirit. She brought warmth and camaraderie to our discussions, and her enthusiasm for exploring new cultures and forging connections was infectious. Her ability to blend professionalism with genuine friendship made her a cherished colleague and friend.

Master Jaggernauth also enthusiastically supported both the TTAWJ and the Caribbean Association of Women Judges (CAWJ) as they held a joint celebration of their respective 10th Anniversaries with a Professional Development Conference and Gala in April 2024. Sharlene attended both the Conference and the Gala and eagerly participated in all aspects of these events.

Master Sharlene Jaggernauth was more than a colleague; she was a mentor, a leader, and a friend whose legacy will continue to inspire those within the legal profession. Her passion for justice, her dedication to the protection of the vulnerable, and her efforts to uplift women and girls in the Caribbean are the hallmarks of a life well-lived in service of others.

Rest in peace, Sharlene. Your work will continue to inspire us all.
