Statement from the International Association of Women Judges
on International Day of Women Judges
March 10, 2026
On this International Day of Women Judges, the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), on behalf of its President, the Honorable Mina Sougrati, and International Board, celebrates the vital contributions of our members and all women judges around the world. Under this year’s theme, Women Beyond the Bench: Protecting Access to Justice, we recognize that the work of women judges to advance human rights and equal justice extends far beyond the courtroom.
Every day, our 6,500 members from over 100 countries and territories uphold the rule of law, safeguard human rights, and work to ensure that justice systems are fair, inclusive, and accessible to all—especially to those whose voices are too often unheard.
We do not simply interpret the law. We break down barriers to promote the full participation and elevation of women in the judiciary. By advancing gender equality within the judiciary, we help build public trust and expand meaningful access to justice for communities worldwide, bringing perspectives and experiences that strengthen the integrity, independence, and legitimacy of judicial institutions.
Women’s leadership also strengthens judicial responses to injustice and helps create legal systems where women and girls can seek protection, accountability, and dignity under the law. Women judges go beyond the bench to educate community members, engage in mentorship, and work across many sectors to combat some of the greatest harms affecting women and girls around the world, including gender-based violence, trafficking in persons, sextortion, and discriminatory laws and practices.
On this day, the IAWJ calls on governments, judicial leaders, and legal institutions to support and promote the full and equal participation of women in the judiciary, and to strengthen laws, policies, and institutions that protect the rights of women and girls. Together, we can ensure that justice is not only delivered from the bench, but also advanced beyond it—reaching every community and every person who seeks fairness, safety, and equality under the law.
