GAWJ Mentorship Programme: Investing in the Future of the Legal Profession

Over the past three years, the Guyana Association of Women Judges (GAWJ) has proudly continued its Mentorship Programme for law students, reaffirming our belief that the responsibility of judicial officers extends beyond the courtroom. We have a responsibility to encourage, guide and inspire those who will one day carry forward the administration of justice and the rule of law.

The study of law provides students with legal knowledge, but mentorship offers something equally valuable — perspective, guidance, encouragement and an understanding of the human responsibility that accompanies a career in law.

Through this programme, our mentees have had the opportunity to interact with judges and judicial officers, learn from their experiences, ask questions and receive practical guidance. They have also seen that the journey towards a successful legal career is rarely straight or perfect. It requires discipline, resilience, humility, integrity and a willingness to continue learning.

This year, we extend gratitude to our GAWJ Mentors- Justice of Appeal Jo-Ann Barlow, Justice Nicola Pierre, Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif, Justice Deborah Kumar-Chetty and Justice Joy Persaud-Singh. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experiences reflects the spirit at the heart of this programme — building bridges between generations of the legal profession and helping young people navigate the path ahead.

For GAWJ, mentorship is about more than preparing students for a career. We hope that every mentee leaves with a clearer understanding of the kind of lawyer and person they should aspire to become — one who acts with integrity, treats others with dignity, respects the rule of law, serves with compassion and understands that the law is ultimately about people and justice.

Not every mentee will follow the same path. Some may become advocates, prosecutors, magistrates or judges, while others may enter public service, academia, business, diplomacy or different fields.

Whatever path they choose, the values nurtured through mentorship — integrity, courage, discipline, empathy, excellence and service — will remain relevant.

The continued success of this programme demonstrates the importance of creating spaces where young people can be supported by those who have travelled the road before them. It also reminds us that mentorship is reciprocal. While we share our experiences with our mentees, their enthusiasm, questions and fresh perspectives remind us of our responsibility to strengthen the profession they will inherit

GAWJ remains committed to mentorship as an important part of our mission. By mentoring young people, we help shape not only their careers, but the future of the legal profession and justice in Guyana.

To all our mentees: believe in yourselves, remain teachable, uphold your integrity and do not let setbacks limit your aspirations. Your journey is only beginning. Dream boldly, work diligently, serve honourably and strive always to leave a positive impact wherever life takes you.
