On March 17, 2023, the Benemerita University of Oaxaca (BUO) hosted a statewide meeting of women judges, the first of its kind, in Oaxaca, Mexico. The objective of the event was to provide a rapprochement between women judges and give them the opportunity to share and express the nature of the continuous challenges they face in their judiciaries.
David Zabdiel Martinez Perez, BUO President, and Audrey Cavaness, IAWJ Program Officer, gave opening remarks, stating that cultivating a strong network and sisterhood of women judges at all levels of the judiciary is crucial to promoting human rights and equal justice for all. Ms. Cavaness also spoke about the IAWJ’s beginnings, how it has grown into a respected organization worldwide and its current commitment to support women entering, rising and thriving within the judiciary.
During the event, working tables were organized to foster dialogue and help gain a better understanding of the common issues faced and establish possible solutions. BUO took this opportunity to commit to working in their academic capacity towards these proposed solutions and to facilitate additional regional meetings for the women judges of Oaxaca in the future.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony to celebrate the women judges with the most years of service in the judiciary. The IAWJ’s current ‘Women in Leadership in Law’ programming is driving initiatives in five countries, including Mexico, to address the barriers faced by women judges.
La IAWJ participó en el primer encuentro estatal de juezas en Oaxaca, México
El 17 de marzo de 2023, la Universidad Benemérita de Oaxaca (BUO) organizó una reunión estatal de mujeres juezas, la primera de su tipo, en Oaxaca, México. El objetivo del evento fue proporcionar un acercamiento entre las juezas y darles la oportunidad de compartir y expresar la naturaleza de los continuos desafíos que enfrentan en sus judicaturas.
David Zabdiel Martínez Pérez, Presidente de BUO, y Audrey Cavaness, Oficial de Programas de la IAWJ, dieron las palabras de apertura, afirmando que cultivar una red sólida y sororidad de mujeres juezas en todos los niveles del poder judicial es crucial para promover los derechos humanos y la igualdad de justicia para todos. La srta. Cavaness también habló sobre los inicios de la IAWJ, cómo se ha convertido en una organización respetada en todo el mundo y su compromiso actual de apoyar a las mujeres que ingresan, ascienden y prosperan dentro del poder judicial.
Durante el evento, se organizaron mesas de trabajo para fomentar el diálogo y ayudar a comprender mejor los problemas comunes que se enfrentan y establecer posibles soluciones. BUO aprovechó esta oportunidad para comprometerse a trabajar en su capacidad académica hacia estas soluciones propuestas y facilitar reuniones regionales adicionales para las juezas de Oaxaca en el futuro. El evento concluyó con una ceremonia de premiación para celebrar a las juezas con más años de servicio en el poder judicial.
El actual programa "Mujeres en el liderazgo en el derecho" de la IAWJ está impulsando iniciativas en cinco países, incluido México, para abordar las barreras que enfrentan las mujeres juezas.
